Symposium to feature Channel 8 Anchor Gloria Campos

Appeared in Duncanville Today, April 25, 2002

The American Business Women's Association wants to educate women about the numerous career opportunities available to them.  The group will hold its Millennium of The Woman Symposium April 27 at the University of North Texas System Center from 8:15-12:30.

"We haven't done anything like this before," said Lisa Huey, Duncanville ABWA Chapter President.  "We wanted to try to promote an educational program for people in the community and let other people know about the ABWA.  We also want to promote ABWA and get new member."

Huey said the group has had tremendous response to the symposium from sponsors and participants and is encouraging those interested to send their registration form in as soon as possible.

The admission cost is $25 which covers two seminars, the keynote speaker and a bistro bag lunch.  The keynote speaker is Channel 8 newscaster and Duncanville resident Gloria Campos, who also will be honored at the symposium.

"Gloria Campos exemplifies the career woman who has found personal an professional success in life," Huey said.

Campos is co-anchor of News 8 at 6 p.m. and News 8 at 10 p.m., and is the producer of "Wednesday's Child" on WFAA-TV in Dallas.  She has won numerous awards, including the lifetime achievement award from the Dallas Press Club, the 1997 achievement award from Women in Film and was ranked as one of the state's most influential Hispanic women in 1996 by Texas Hispanic magazine.

She is also devoted to her family.  A self-described "soccer mom," Campos enjoys being mother to twin sons Greg and Tony.  She has been married to Lance Brown for more than 20 years.

Other speakers are Mary Withersppon, past national president of ABWA and Maura Schreier, business consultant and engineer.  Schreier is also the author of Real-World Selling for Out-of-this-World Results, a book she said captures what sales professionals need to be successful.

"As a business professional we have to have our target that we're trying to achieve," she said.  "Setting goals is one way to achieve that, so my presentation will be about setting goals."

Schreier said women who attend the symposium will definitely gain from it.

"It's a fabulous opportunity for women to learn from other business professionals," she said.  "I just think it's a wonderful for women to learn what they need to become better.  That's why it's such a wonderful opportunity."

Witherspoon, a training consultant with Consulting partners of Dallas, will speak on "Trends Affecting the Workplace."  She will address societal, technological and business trends for the next 20 years and will also share the five critical traits to ensure success in the new workplace.

The event will be emceed by Dr. Gayle Glenn, honored by ABWA as the 2002 American Business Woman of the Year.

For those interested in earning continuing education credits, the symposium has been certified for two hours of credit by the National Office of ABWA.
